WEEKEND MUSIC PREVIEW: Deaner and the Monkey Junk
Posted on October 21, 2011 By Michael Senchuk Music
It’s a bit quieter on the live music scene this weekend, with Rexall playing host to only the Oilers on Saturday night, but there’s still some extraordinary melodies to listen to on both Friday and Saturday nights, including a Greek metal band (Firewind), a CD release party (Market Forces), and Deaner of FUBAR (Night Seeker).
Friday, Oct. 21
Firewind – Europe’s heavy metal assault on Edmonton continues again this weekend, but just for a change of pace, here’s a band from Greece, led by guitar maestro Gus G. Arsis. White Wizard opens. Pawn Shop, 6 pm, $20.
F&M – This local folk-pop duo has an ardent following amongst the Edmonton music community, and for good reason. Tyler Butler opens. Yellowhead Brewery, 7 pm, $12.
Colleen Brown – Another local artist, this pop-sympathetic singer songwriter also delves in the soul and R&B end, and has a worldwide reputation for amazing lyrics. Lucas Chaisson opens. Arden Theatre, 7:30 pm, $25.
Hanzel Und Gretyl – The New City Compound hosts another metal act tonight. The band’s website says it all – “an Intergalactik Fairytale stompin’ through the Evil Black Forest Galaxy spillin’ beer, destroying sound waves and keeping all things UBER!” Interested? How could you not be? Left Spine Down and Ivory Cell open. 8 pm, $15.
Scenic Route To Alaska – This local folk act picked up a legion of new fans at the folk music festival, both for its extraordinary musical contributions, as well as a commanding stage presence in hosting the U22 stage. Lou Canon and Brock Tyler open. Artery, 8 pm, $8.
Market Forces – What weekend would be complete without a CD release party? Join this local rock band that features John Tidswell (NeoA4) and Andrew White (both of whom were in the Café Gurus). Opening the show will Stone Iris and Pure Mud. Starlite Room, 9pm, $10.
Saturday, Oct. 22
Monkey Junk (above) – This Ottawa blues band got its name from the legendary Son House, who once said “I’m talkin’ ‘bout the blues … I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout no monkey junk”. Haven Social Club, 8 pm, $20.
Lab Coast – This Calgary alt-pop quartet plays the Wunderbar Saturday night, with The Moas, Liam Trimble and White Beauty. 8:30 pm, $5.
Night Seeker – Deaner of FUBAR fame hits Edmonton with his band, and will also be talking about the DVD of FUBAR II. Monster Truck opens. Starlite Room, 9 pm, $20.
Forester – Downstairs from Deaner, the Brixx will feature a triple bill consisting of this Edmonton band, as well as The Perms from Brandon, Manitoba, and another local band, Hale Hale. 9 pm, $10.
