WEEKEND MUSIC PREVIEW: Beyond the Boom
This weekend’s musical calendar is of course dominated by the 2012 version of Sonic Boom on Sunday. So far it’s looking like the weather will cooperate for the event, which will feature Linkin Park and Silversun Pickups at Northlands. There are also some great local bands playing around town on Friday and Saturday.
Friday
Joe Nolan – This local alt-blues musician recorded his third album in Nashville in 2010, and is heading back again in September to perform a showcase at the Americana Music Convention with the band Whitehorse. He also did a whirlwind tour of Europe earlier this year. Local favorites Scenic Route to Alaska will open. Elevation Room, 8 pm, $10.
Fuquored – Originally founded as the new project from ex-Dayglo Abortions’ guitarist Mike Jak, this show will also mark the release of the metal quartet’s sophomore album. The Dirtbags, Cocaine Moustache and Preying Saints will also perform. Pawn Shop, 8 pm, $10.
Saturday
Wasepic – Another local band, this time with a folk rock-post-punk-psychedelic slant on the musical universe, this trio was founded in 2002 by Jared Epp and Greg Becic. Haven Social Club, 8 pm, $10.
Ground Level Falcons – This alt-rock quartet from Edmonton formed in late 2011 as the members were on hiatus from their previous bands – Matt Gardiner, Adrian Armitage and Brendan Kobayashi from Vox Humana; and bassist Greg Kolodychuk of Axiomatik. Turns out the former had applied for a 10K20 Grant from Rawlco Radio a few years back ($20,000 grants for recording time), and were accepted in late 2011, so after finding Greg they got together and recorded an 11-track album at Sound Extractor. Distant Calm and Minuet are also on the bill. Brixx, 9 pm.
Sunday
Sonic Boom 2012 – This year’s festival lineup is packed with extraordinary musical talent from start to end. The headliner, Linkin Park, is touring in support of its latest album, “Living Things,” and has had innumerable hits along the path, including “Somewhere I Belong”, “In the End”, and “What I’ve Done.” Other exceptional sets are expected to come from the return of The Joy Formidable, Young the Giant, Silversun Pickups and Edmonton’s own Zerbin. Northlands, 11:30 am, $90 and up. Buy here.
Sonic Boom Afterparty – Victoria’s Acres Of Lions (top picture) is headlining the afterparty at the Starlite Room, which you can get into free with a ticket stub from Sonic Boom; tickets will also be available at the door. Other bands of note include Forester and Bomb Squad Rookie.
