Pentatonix, a pitch perfect success story, coming to Edmonton

We can thank the Pitch Perfect movies for renewing interest in a capella singing – but there are a few real-life vocal groups hitting the big-time in their wake.

Pentatonix is one of them. The Texas quintet has only been around eight years, mainly famous for their lovely renditions of Christmas songs, and they’re already mounting a world tour. The group comes to Edmonton on Sunday, June 30 – at Rogers Place, where all the big acts play. Opening the show will be the pop singer Rachel Platten, perhaps best known for her Fight Song. Tickets to the show are $29.50 to $129.50 and go on sale Feb. 15.

Pentatonix came to fame as the winner of NBC’s The Sing Off in 2011. Two of the group members in fact had dropped out of college to compete on the show, so you know Cinderella stories can come true from time to time. It was a bit of a bumpy road, but after becoming a YouTube sensation, the group earned worldwide acclaim, for both their creative covers, and for what is said to be an amazing performance style wherein all sounds – vocals, guitars, bass, drums, etc. – are made by human voices. They’re an actual Pitch Perfect success story.
